Sibiu county Romania

Sibiu is a city in Transylvania, a historic region of Romania. Located about 275 km (171 miles) north-west of Bucharest, the city straddles the Cibin River, a tributary of the Olt. Now the capital of Sibiu County, Sibiu was also the capital of the Principality of Transylvania between 1692 and 1791, and again from 1849 to 1865. Nicknamed “The City with Eyes”, it is a well-known tourist destination for both local and international visitors. Famous for its culture, history, food and varied architecture – including the iconic “houses with eyes” that gave Sibiu its nickname – the city has attracted growing attention since the start of the 21st century. In 2004, its historic centre began the process of becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sibiu was named European Capital of Culture in 2007. A year later, it was ranked “Europe’s 8th most idyllic place to live” by Forbes. In 2019, Sibiu was named European Region of Gastronomy, and in 2020 it was designated “Europe’s sixth-best tourist destination”. Sibiu will host the European Wandering Capital event in 2021, the most important walking tourism event in Europe. A European Union summit was also held in the city in 2019.
